Best Acoustic Guitar Case for Airplane Travel?

I have a Gator ATA case which I've used about a half-dozen times to transport an acoustic guitar as checked baggage.  Although I've never had a problem in the 6 or 7 times I've checked the Gator case, I've read so many horror stories of smashed guitars, that I only take my cheapest acoustic when I travel.

I'm probably never going to entrust a high-end Martin to the airline baggage apes, but I would like to be able to travel with a reasonably nice guitar, like my player-condition '72 D-35, which is worth about $1,300.  I would hate to see it damaged, but it wouldn't kill me the way losing my Golden Era D-18 would do.

The two cases I've heard the best things about are the Calton and the Hiscox cases.  Does anybody know of problems with either of these cases?  Are there better options than Calton or Hiscox, and/or anything which might provide near the same level of protection for less money?

Any help or advice would be much appreciated.

Thanks, Kerry. Do you think the Carbon Fiber cases are worth the extra dough or is the standard Calton case sufficient? If I do buy a Calton case, I'll invest in the Small Dog Case cover as well, based on your recommendation.

Your case looks fantastic. You won't have trouble picking that out on the baggage carousel. And your new custom Collings is to die for!

"I have a left handed Blue Chip TAD 3R 40 pick and I find it a great pick to use, no scraping and quick on the strings. The only problem is that the tone is quite bass-y which is great for lead picking or Mandolin but not so good for rhythm…"

"Hi, Timothy.  I was contacted by a Timothy Allred about the guitars I make and I wasn't able to send an email back to him because his email program didn't know my email address.  Are you he?  Thanks."

Tim Allred contact

Howdy.  I'm a guitar maker and I got an inquiry from one Tim Allred on my contact form that I use on my website to try to cut down on spam.  Unfortunately he didn't give a phone number and he gave an email address that will accept messages only from addresses that are on his list--which obviously mine is not.  So my messages have all been returned to me.  There are many Tim Allreds around.  I noticed that this site has a member by that name, who is clearly interested in guitars, so I though…See More
