Why isn't there 2 1/2 steps between every string?

Hey Folks,

This has always been a curiosity to me and I can't seem to find an answer.

There are 2 1/2 steps between E -A, A-D, D-G, but then 2 steps from the G to the B string and then 2 1/2 again from B-E. Why wouldn't the strings go E,A,D,G,C,F?
I realize you can tune the strings to whatever you want but why is the standard the way it is?

Well - that's a great question. I'll try to keep it simple. The standard tuning evolution rose out of a desire to keep a simple fingering b/t scales and chords. By tuning the strings 5 semitones (4th) it allows for a symmetrical fingering of a chromatic scale which fall under your four fingers w/o having to shift before changing to the next string. The presence of the M3rd b/t the G - B strings does break the pattern slightly, but it provides for an easiness of some very popular chords as well as more diversity in fingering options.

If you tuned your guitar in total P4th (as you inferred) you would not have the simple chords and symmetry of fingerings. With the standard tuning as is, the fingerboard can be divided into 5 shapes and/or regions that allow you to move up or down the neck while maintaining a very tight and symmetrical fingering.

So, the short answer - it created symmetry for the four fingers of our left hand.

P.S. If your interested in learning more about the 5 shapes (regions) check out my group: Theory, Beyond the Sound.

Thanks,

Then why would people be interested in different tunings, to make it easier to play a different set of chords or just a different type of sound?

I'm not sure anyone really knows exactly why we tune the way we do.

With the proposed tuning EADGCF we would still have five patterns that move up the neck (they'd just be different than the ones we know now) but with the second string tuned to B, it gives us a partial open G chord - I can't imagine flatpicking with out that.

tune your guitar like this and you will see...

It is just not convenient for a human hand.

Steve, my office is across the street from Dusty Strings in Seattle and it turns out they have a D18GE in stock. I had not even noticed it but picked it up. The neck takes some getting used to (or probably for me the bigger adjustment is tied to a 1…

So what you are talking about here Jon, is not what I started the thread for( but it IS a nice aside!) You NEED to know what your humidity is at in your house were your axe lives. That is what the Hygrometer is for. There are all kinds of threads ev…

I've never had a gauge that I've used for any of my guitars, but what I have done which only costs a few dollars is to get a travel soap box and a sponge to use as a small humidifier that I keep in my case. It's works really well and fits perfectly…
