Thanks Kathy - great suggestion! And I expect that if due diligence is given to the ear training, after 5-10 tunes you'll find that you don't really want the TAB anymore, or at least it will be used it in a completely different way.

Ganon,

I tried your exercise using Shooting Creek. I listened to it over and over for about 10 mintues straight. I then turn it off and tried to play it. I had the A part on the 2nd or 3rd try. The B part took quiet a few more listens but I got. This is definitely something I need to work on.

Thanks
Wayne

Wayne, Derek - sounds like you guys are shooting to get things right on a (nearly) first try - Bravo! - for now I'm happy to be able to do it at all. It still took me a couple of hours to get Shootin' Creek, even after a couple of weeks of listening (although I didn't have the 'blueprint' - except the 'all D' part).

Wayne, Derek - sound like you guys are working towards getting it right on (nearly) the first try. Bravo! - lofty goal - I suppose it should be mine too, but for right now I'm happy to be able to do it at all (It took me about 2 hours to get Shootin' Creek after listening for several weeks, tho' I didn't have the 'blueprint' except for the 'all D' part.) Oh well, old dog and new tricks . . .

You've fired us up with enthusiasm, Ganon! I'm just itching to crack on with this.

Thanks Derek - you fired up makes me fired up. Sharing = increased commitment and new ways to break down previously (perceived) impossible roadblocks (I hope). Gotta sign off and go play . . .

As fun as the first logo was, some of the taboholics may find it offensive, and it is not something that I actually agree with - rather, proper and limited use of tab, not no tab. Thus I have changed it to something more benign before taking off on a short vacation.

Best to all!

Hi all- back from very short vacation.

I've obtained permission from Adam Granger to use a limited number (up to 8) of audio tracks from the CD's that correspond to his tab book 'Granger's [508] Fiddle Tunes for Guitar' for learning material in this group. They are good, well played, yet relatively simple arrangements; have stereo separated (simple) rhythm backing tracks, so you can work on either rhythm or lead - isolated, or as partner to play along with, or together for context. I (and others) highly recommend them, they can be found at

http://www.granger-music.com/order_stuff.htm

(book $30, CDs $100, cassette tape $60)

at first glance, $100 seems like a lot, so I think of it as five fiddle tunes for every $0.99 - 'nuf said. For those that are both brave and serious about this, you might order only the CDs or cassettes (ha), and hold off on the book for a while.

Quandary is how to best use our 'license' - perhaps group members can suggest tunes that they would like to learn (but are also *appropriate* for  'beginning' ear learners). Then I can post downloadable versions here (without TAB). If anyone needs it, I can provide slowed versions, broken down in separate phrase or semi-phrase sound files, and additional hints (Key, chord progression, tune structure, etc.) as required.

A list of the tunes can be found at:

http://www.marvsmusic.com/index.php?_a=viewProd&productId=391

(nearly 1000 listed because Adam does a good job of listing and cross-referencing tunes with multiple titles and similarities). Let me know (a) if you think there is a better way to proceed, (b) what you would like to see posted.

Lee - glad to see you here. It can be, but certainly need not be, an all or nothing proposition.

All- I'm currently making a list of two-phrase songs in Granger's and will post them in a separate discussion so the linear comment section doesn't get too cluttered.

Small change in the group title - no point in excluding those that can help the most.
