Marco, I hesitate to do Irish stuff for FGM because I am hardly an expert on the Irish stuff. There was a piece on John Doyle recently in Acoustic Guitar and in discussing ornamentation (particularly the single string triplety stuff) he starts with something like "here's what separates the bluegrassers from the Irish players." In my case that's so true. One of my tasks for myself is to try to learn how to do that.

In any case, I clearly sound like a bluegrasser, and I've come to terms with that (while I continue to listen to real Irish music to try to develop the right feel).

Kathy, I think the way you incorporate crosspicking into those tunes is pretty unique - I don't see anyone do it here in Ireland. I'd vote for an article on that in FGM

ok, I posted Kerfunken. No real crosspicking, though the last section has something resembling it. Actually it's just that the melody notes live in the arpeggio.

Hi Kathy,

I completely understand what you mean. Last summer I spent a week with John Doyle and I had a really great time learning from him. He is a great teacher, but very advanced on the flatpicking side and talking about the ornamentation it's true that it's something that gives the Irish feel to a tune. He was calling that "dirt" saying that he was trying to imitate the uillean pipes triplet sound. Also a tune needs that rhythm that they call "lilt" that makes the difference from bluegrass music.

I play mainly Irish Traditional Music (both accompanyment and flatpicking tunes) and I'm listening to a lot of tenor banjo playing like Enda Scahill(Pick It Up) or Damien O'Kane (The Mistery Inch) and trying to move that sound to the guitar and until now it has been a  good school for me.

I spent a long time studying and playing bluegrass before going to Irish Traditional and I found that for me it easier playing Irish tunes. I don't really know why :)

Wow, Marco, a week with Doyle! I'm so jealous. I must see about trying to get a lesson/lessons from him... or Cahill, or McGlynn, or.... wait, Randal Bays, he's at least in the same time zone!  but a fingerpicker...  just to try to really get some input and detailed advice.

Maybe you can share a little of what you learned, Marco...

I'd like to have a lesson with all the people you mentioned:) They are all great guitar players.

Regarding sharing what I've learned with John it's kind of difficult. He was mainly playing the tune and we were playing it back all by ear, no written music. It was kind of hard at the beginning, but after a while it was ok. It was a very hard class.

Congratulations on retirement - now that you've managed to ditch your day job, I guess you can devote even more time to your true avocation - new CD please! (but maybe relax a little too . . .)
