I have been a fan since I first heard him tune a guitar, but I'd probably hang around with him just for the jokes. He is a character. Was fortunate enough to spend a bunch of time picking around the campfire with him at the "Bend" a couple years ago. I don't think he ever played the same lick twice. And when I heard his chops on the old No'Caster, I liked him even better.

I'm going to see David at 'Fiddle & Pick' in Pegram, TN tomorrow night (Saturday). First time for me to see his solo gig. Looking forward to it.

David has to be an alien, it just isn't human the way his mind works and the music comes out. I've had the good fortune to play with a lot of my heroes and I don't get too star struck (ok, a little but not like a lot of folks do) and intimidated. I confess though playing with David messes me up. It's hard to concentrate on my own playing while I'm listening to him. I have a few David stories, but I'll throw this one out there. The year after I won Winfield I put together a little workshop tour together with Collings guitars on my way back out there to back up Cody Kilby in the contest. One of those stops was in Nashville for Cotten Music a few days before the contest. I called Cody and said if he would come to the workshop it would be a good chance to run through his tunes, he lived about 2 hours away at the time. So he comes to the gig, Kim Sherman had us play in a room above the Bongo Java club (I think it was called), nice room with a heck of a light system on the stage. Well Cody and I play some tunes and then proceed to answer a few questions for a rather sparse crowd that we couldn't see due to the lights in our eyes. One of the questions had to do with right hand exercises, and I brought up this cool lick that David does on his cd that was just out, a cross picking thing that was real melodic but not extremely difficult on the left hand so you could concentrate on the right hand. I played through it and someone yelled to slow it down, so I did and was hoping they wre able to pick it up ok. Well after the show the house lights came on, and sitting in the back row was David. I think he had just got back into town or something and Dan Miller had picked him up and dropped by to see Kim about something. So David walks up and dryly says "that was interesting, good show". I could have died knowing that he sat through me trying to play one of his diddies, lol.

David did a great show at Fiddle & Pick tonight. Usual dry humor to boot. He played a brazilian and addy Merrill and it sounded great as usual. O.k., that's the update. I'm going to bed now........

DG is my personal fave. One of the reasons for this is that so much of what he plays comes straight from a chord. What I hear is "linear harmony", whereas some other guitar players run scalar ideas up and down. I like both approaches to playing, but I particularly like DG's. I've been working up all the solos from "Hootenany", then I plan to move on to his other recordings and learn those solos, too.

Bill, that sounds like one and the same. lol. I remember it being a fairly small room but good acoustics, but a low ceiling that put the bright lights right in your eyes so you couldn't see anything.

News alert - David finally shaved that huge beard!:-) I saw him last night at the Kenny & Amanda Smith show at the Station Inn, and we had a good conversation about the pitfalls of excessive facial hair. And, he mentioned new music coming soon....
