Flatpicking Essentials: Freshman Class 2010

This group is for those that have recently started working with Dan Miller's Flatpicking Essentials Series, and want to share their thoughts and support each others development. General idea is, as a group, to actively work through F.E. together.

Band in a Box for Metronome Practice 5 Replies

I was wondering about the groups opinion of using Band in a Box for metronome practice. I purchased a copy about 6 months ago along with all the bluegrass realtracks. I had been using it as backup…Continue

Apathy - Picking up the pace. 35 Replies

From recent comments, it seems that even those still active in the group are fading. I propose we speed things up a bit - take the rest of May to finish the exercises in the first half of FE#1, and…Continue

Hi folks,

Just a quick note to say how much I enjoyed Dan and Tim's workshop in Long Beach, CA yesterday.  They are both great players as well as great teachers.  I learned some important things about getting good tone, pick angle and grip style, and how scales are used as a foundation for improvisation, just to name a few.

I highly recommend catching their workshop if and when it comes your way.  I left feeling rejuvinated about my guitar playing, and I will be approaching my FE studies with greater focus.

Thanks to Dan and Tim for a great day.

Hi all,

Just checking in with the group . . . I am still trying to focus on the FE series but got off on a tangent.  I am planning to get the new DVD video, "Creating Solos: Embellishing the Melody".  Hopefully that will get me back on track.

Thanks to Dan for realizing the need for a video companion.

I got sidetracked from Volume 2 by the exercises of playing familiar tunes by ear, then giving them the Carter-style treatment. It was a valuable experience, but the result was me playing very simple and very slow arrangements. Also, I had trouble playing these arrangements with other people, because even though my mind's ear can hear the next note, it still takes me too long to play it.

To learn how to play faster, I've been playing fiddle tune arrangements by other people. They are generally more interesting than what I come up with, so I'm learning a bit about arrangements, but the best value I've been getting so far is that my mind and fingers are moving faster.

For learning how to embellish melodies, I'm going back to Volume 2. A superb feature of Volume 2 is that new techniques are presented in the context of songs that were presented in the Carter-style section. I've decided to work two of those songs, "Wildwood Flower" and "Home Sweet Home," through all the techniques. This will give me different way to play the song every time the lead comes back around the circle to me.

Hey folks, checking in after a loooong absence. I'm still working on the Essentials, but they've blocked the "ning" network at work, so I've been absent from discussions.

I've completed #2 recently. I'm going to spend a day or two reviewing #1, then I'm going to work through #2 again learning each song in another key, and adding some of the advanced techniques from the end of the book. I'm very pleased with the progress I've been able to make from #2. I'd like to work more on the "melody burnout" during my review of #2. Then off to #3.

I did have to overcome one hurdle. I learned to play heavy metal when I was young (I'm 41 now). As such, I've never heard most of the songs presented in the Essential books. I'm really enjoying discovering all this stuff for myself. I'm also working with the "Speed, Accuracy, and Tone" book. I'm in no hurry. I want to make sure I get everything presented nailed down. I've left too many "holes" in my guitar education over the years. This time I'm going to get it right.
