I have a question for the recordists out there. I have an AEA Tube Micpre for my ribbon mic. The AEA is designed for ribbons and as such does not supply phantom power, in fact, it doesn't like phantom power. I have an AT 8801 power source for my condensers and I've been told that the 8801 is capped at the output end and doesn't let phantom power out, and I'm wondering if I can use it to run a condenser through the AEA without harming it. I appreciate any responses, thanks.

"The AEA is designed for ribbons and as such does not supply phantom power, in fact, it doesn't like phantom power." is an understatement indeed! it will KILL your mic!! the only ribbon mics that can withstand a shot of (accidental) phantom power are the el diabolo mics by Crowley and Tripp. Ribbon mics are extremely delicate and phantom power is kryptonite to them. AEA mic pres are specifiaclly designed for ribbon mics only.

I would consider investing in an API lunchbox setup so you can add different mic pres for the condenser world.
I like the: API 512c, the Shadow Hills Gamma pre, La Chappelle (with the Jensen tube), A design Pacifica P1. That would REALLY cover a wide range of sounds. I know vintageking.com has all these products and I found the gear heads over on gearslutz.com to be REALLY useful!

I don't follow your response, can I use an external power source for the condenser and then preamp with the AEA. Are you saying that the AT 8801 might "leak" phantom power to the AEA and from there harm a ribbon if I am using one in the other channel? The phantom power won't hurt the AEA? Thanks.
Mike, i replied to this but it's in the "RECORDING" group.
