i'm in, let's do it. these might be a little less well-known tunes but they are not too hard: new five cent piece (grier/compton recorded it although i think they play it in D), shove the pigs' foot a little further into the fire (molsky has great version, it's in G)

I'd definitely be up for recording together! I don't know either of the tunes that Avril has suggested but I'd be happy to learn them! Marcy, I looked up Shelly park guitars they look gorgeous, I would love to try one! Another to add to my ever growing guitar wish list! As far as gypsy tunes go I am a huge Django fan and have been learning his transcriptions for a while - Nuages, Minor Swing, Dinah (which my current favourite), Djangology, Blue Drag - but its a life times work!! I can kind of get the tone I like by learning his licks parrot fashion, but I stil find it really hard to improvise in that style. It all comes out sounding like bluegrass these days! Are you going to be at IBMA? I'm starting to get excited now!

Sophia, you're picking Django tunes? That's fantastic! We need to play together! You live in the UK? How many trips do you make to the US? Have you met Hazel Wriggley? She's a remarkable guitar player! She's based in the Orkney's but travels all the time and also runs a music school. Blue Drag? I don't know that one. Thanks, I'll look it up. You're right, it is a lifetime's work! Sorry, I will not be at IBMA this year. Have a great time!

Avril, These are both GREAT tunes and worthy of consideration from the group. I was leaning towards the keys of C and G because the edit would be easy so chances of a medley working would be higher. The last time through the C tune we could use the classic C7, C#7, D7, stop, then into G. If you have another approach please call me and hum it over the phone.
Are you at IBMA? The people at IBMA are probably too busy to think about it right now.
I'd really like to get as many players from this group as possible.

Here's a method for recording together...
You'll need...
A way to record yourself - preferably in stereo. For those of you who are computer people I'll give you an FTP site to send me your tracks. For those of you who are not using a computer, let me know what you have access to and I'll send you an individual plan that works with whatever you have.
It would be so cool to include everyone from beginners to advanced!
The next step is picking tunes and tempos.
I'll be on the road for the next few days.

Happy Pickin' to all!
Marcy

Joining this group with a reservation...and that is this: I started my career in say 1962, and have always just played and always respected other players without thought of gender. And while having taught in womens prison and in many camps, I don't really like the (girls/guitar goddess) angle and I am assuming none of that is here in this group.

Hi Alice,
This group is new and it can reflect who we really are. To be honest, I've really only seen the "girl/guitar goddess" attitude in the Rock and Country fields although it probably happens in other areas.
If we look at the flatpicking world that the men live in there are a very select few at the top getting most of the work and respect and everybody else falls far below no matter how great their musical abilities really are. That's a false hierarchy and it was not set up by the players. It was set up by record companies, press agents and booking agents trying to sell their guy as the best. Other press, periodicals and magazines are usually not far behind. The whole set up is terribly unfair to most of the guys in our field.
We have a huge advantage as women players and that's to learn from the mistakes that have already been made. We can make the choice to work within the genre that's already been created, side step it entirely or any combination of both.
This group belongs to us and nobody else. To my knowledge there has never been a group like it. We are the real definition of "Female Guitar Player" and that definition will change a little bit with every new person who plays. The bigger we get the stronger our voice will be. Who knows what will happen? I sure don't! We might surprise ourselves!

Yes Kathy. I Kamp therefore I am!
Hey! I ran across a picture of Django's sister in a book. She's holding a guitar and it looks like she might be playing lead.... does anyone know about her??
