Finally, I'm not alone! I knew there just had to be at least one more Norman Blake fan somewhere out there! Welcome aboard Mr. Mattingly!

Very strange... why so few Norman enthusiasts? Totally unique picker with impeccable taste. The music outweighs the hot licks. Maybe that's why?

I believe that Norman is one of the most tasteful and melodic players around.

Just one of many Norman fans north of the border.

Have been a big fan since I first heard the sulpher springs album. Unique.

I've been a fan also since hearing the Back Home in Sulphur Springs album when it was brand new. I was thrilled to see him and Nancy in April in Georgia playing with James and Rachel Bryan on fiddle and mandolin. After the show he was gracious in meeting people and talking with everyone who wanted to meet him. He put on a great show, and he is such a nice unassuming guy.

Norman is really an excellent guitarist and singer. I like his style, Old Time and very fluid.

OK, I'll bite. Out of all the bluegrass/ flat picking books and music I have, I'm attracted to Norman's music the most. Probably because I'm a solo player, no ambitions to "parking lot jam" or try and be part of a band, and Norman's style lends itself most to a solo player. Big difference playing a piece arranged by Norman and the same piece with just the melody lead lines! I just purchased MelBay's Norman Blake Anthology tonight, can't wait to get it.

Andy, I think your on to something there. The music outweighs the hot licks by a good country mile! A hot lick is really only as good as the 2nd, 3rd and/or 4th instruments backing it up. Oh sure it's impressive to watch and listen to someone lay out a hot fast lick, but with nothing behind it, on it's own, it's good maybe once to impress your friends, then twice for good measure, but after that it's old. My .02.

Dave

Bob Mesher replied to Bob Cron's discussion Norman's Preferences
"All I remember was when he had a Martin with flush frets on it (i.e. just markers for a guitar that was designed for slide only) and he had it converted for flat picking. "
