How about a brief history of each member's recording history? Mine is pretty amateurish and starts with an old Webcor reel-to-reel that I had when I was about 16. Friends and I would mess around with it but never did anything serious. Skip ahead about 25 years and I was playing flute a lot. I used a friend's four-track cassette recorder to make an album of flute tunes using a fingerpicking guitar LP for the backup tracks. Don't worry, this was just for family and friends, not for sale. My interest in flute was flagging and I wanted some proof that at one time I had played at a fairly high level of competence. More recently, about 5 years or so ago I bought a Tascam digital 8-track recorder intending to use it to record our band. It and its manuals were so complex I felt over-matched and sold it after not using it for two or three years because of total technological terror computer-manual mind freeze. My latest acquisition is a Zoom H2 digital recorder that has been wonderful for recording practices, transferring tunes to CD in MP3 format and using the CDs for practice, to learn lyrics, etc. I'm planning on using the H2 and a combination of it and Audacity to record a self-produced CD of my own tunes during 2009. So, a question: do others think this will work or should I consider investing in something more elaborate? I would be using the CDs for gifts to friends, demos for possible venues and possibly to sell at gigs. If I need to buy some more elaborate device and/or software, what do those of you with more experience recommend? Any pitfalls to look out for? Thanks!

This is atopic too often neglected. We either talk about the newest mini-recorder compared to the old, or we talk about studio level, which most of us neither need or are terribly interested.

I like the idea of covering everything from equipment and software to various enviroments and tools.

Great idea, Marcy. I've been into recording for a while and there is always something new to learn. I got my start trying to do multi-track recording with a cassette deck and a pioneer open reel deck and then learned how to do it right in the audio technology program at Indiana University on a 2" 16-track tape recorder and 1/4" 2-track machine. Editing with a razor blade was always fun! Eventually I worked my way up to my own 1/2" TASCAM 16-track recorder and now I'm doing it all "in the box" running Logic Pro on my Mac.
