Well done, Stephen! It's got a kinda Confederate look to it as well which is OK being associated with folks from Richmond, Virginia!

I've been giving some thought to the purpose of this group and how we can derive some benefit from it, to make it active so that it doesn't become redundant.
So, first of all, I was thinking that each of us should try to come with some ideas of subjects we might like to see here.
For example: it would be a good place for members to inform others of any suitable events or gigs they know of that we might be interested in. If either of you have had a look at my blog you will see I have posted a Bluegrass Music Festival event at Guildtown (near Perth) at the end of July. I will post that again here so others can see it.
Also, did you know that Don McLean is playing at the Glasgow Royal Concert Hall on the 12th May? He may also be playing Edinburgh. I know he isn't particularly a "flatpicker" but he is a terrific acoustic guitarist.
Any other ideas?

Good idea David, I know i would like to have been reminded of the Transatlantic Sessions concert and the Celtic Connection festival. I think Dan Tyminski? Jerry Douglas etc were playing, Id like to see them again. Ill check out the Blue Grass festival though cheers

Hi Folks

Just wanted to say 'Hello'!
Technically I am not a flatpicker as I play 5 String Banjo and 'folk' Guitar.
I am however intested in Bluegrass of all flavours but mainly banjo related.
I don't play as often as I should and so am still pretty bad but I try hard but not often enough.
I live on the southside of Edinburgh, Scotland.
Best Wishes
IanM

I see there is a reference elsewhere on this group to the 24th Annual GUILDTOWN BLUEGRASS MUSIC FESTIVAL (near Perth) on July 30th — August 1st, 2010. The website is http://www.scottishbluegrass.com/ . I am tempted to go to this as I intended to go last year and never made it.

I also came across an Edinburgh 'local' bluegrass band called Southern Tenant Folk Union see http://www.southerntenantfolkunion.com/. The banjo player is certainly Edinburgh based and they list their influences as the following people.
" The Stanley Brothers, Gillian Welch, Steve Earle, Carter Family, Don Reno, The Long Ryders, Flatt & Scruggs, Townes Van Zandt, Buck Owens, Tandy, Johnny Cash, Merle Haggard, The Louvin Brothers, The Country Gentlemen, The Good Ol Boys, The Grateful Dead, Wicker Man Soundtrack, The Coal Porters, Bill Monroe, Red Allen, Dock Boggs, Gene Clark, Belle & Sebastian, Roscoe Holcomb"

That is quite a list!

A warm welcome to Ian, and oor new, honorary, Scotsman, ganon!

On Wednesday night I went to hear not one but two Bluegrass bands playing at East Kilbride Arts Centre.
The first, Dapper McDans, brought a lively blend on OT and Bluegrass with Fiddle/guitar/autoharp, bajo, guitar (Martin), Acoustic Bass, and Mandolin. The mando, fiddle and autoharp had no pick-ups so were a drowned out a bit with the others but the singing was great and having a live band play in EK was just teriffic! They were good but their flatpicking was no further than Example 9 in F.E. Vol 1!!!
The support band was Shore Light, originally a due but now a trio with addition of a bass. Brilliant singers, especially the lead guy, Ian, along with the girl, Marie...great harmonising. His banjo playing was exceptional and Marie also doubled on bass.

Next local gig coming up (which Shore Light will also be playing) is at The Meeting Place, Stonelaw Church, Rutherglen, Glasgow, on the 26th March@ 7:30. I will certainly be there!

Hey Guys.

Here is a question which is non picking related.

My mother was English. My Father was English
I was borne in Scotland.
WHAT AM I?

I might be able to russle up a prize for the most inventive answer.

Cheers
