Looking forward to participating in this group. Like many others I've enjoyed your FGM column for years. I've mainly been a Bluegrasser but have been really immersing myself in jazz and swing lately, so the current series you're doing is very timely for me!

These studies, 12 in all, are grouped into 1 piece called "Opus 7". So there's Opus 7 No. 1, Opus 7, No. 2, etc. They are available individually and as a complete set eventually. Thanks, John...if I'm getting your drift, it's not unlike an exercise SK has in his building speed video where he says to play "Old Joe Clark" as triplets (each note three times). He also has some scales to play as triplets and some cross-picking. The point is to play each of the notes a lot. At any rate, your exercises sound beneficial enough that if you have them as a lesson I would be happy to pay for them. Thanks for the response.

Hey John,
Since there are 4 16th notes/beat, that means 4 notes/click. I composed 12 etudes or studies, one in each key, utilizing the shifting techniques that Segovia employed in his scale studies. Each week I shift my focus key, or Key of the Week, up a 5th, so it's a 12-week cycle around the Circle of 5ths. You could make an exercise out of 8 bars of a fiddle tune if you wanted to. The important thing is the time element. 5 minutes straight every day builds a lot of endurance. How about 2 X's a day!? All you need is a metronome, a clock, and a guitar.

Hi john,
Could you elaborate on that a bit? When you say you practiced an etude playing 16th notes at 104, does that mean instead of playing the actual time value of the notes you play them all as 16th notes?

Today I practiced an original jazz etude in A...16th notes at mm=104 for 10 minutes straight. This kind of work out is extremely beneficial.

Correction: If any of you were in my class at the Kaufman Kamp this year when I was talking about the Gershwin tune, "Oh, Lady Be Good", I mentioned that it was in the key of F, but that the flatpicking community prefers to play it in the key of G...for obvious reasons. I was mistaken.
The tune IS in the key of G. I have been playing the tune for years with Dixieland jazz bands. The dixieland guys like to play it in F. I don't really know why, but it probably has something to do with how it lays on the "horns". Anyway, I apologize for the mis-information!

John, I enjoy your columns. Sometimes a big leap for me, but a great addition. What is that crab walk with the left hand? Maybe more like tiny spiders?
