I think one of the things that is really holding me back is that I have a very undisciplined practice routine. In fact, undisciplined is too kind....haphazard would be a better word.

So, I think I need to develop a routine. What should be included in a practice/learning session? Scales? Right hand technique? Left hand technique? Learning tunes?

How much time should be devoted to each? Is it better to learn one tune at a time of mix them up for variety?

Everyone develops practise habits over time. Whatever works best for you and can be maintained consistently. Good playing comes in attention to details and practising slowly with a metronome for some of your practise time. You need grind time to develop muscle memory and fun time to just play. Practise more tunes than scales. No one will ever ask you to play a scale. Get the theory to play the scale, get it under your fingers and learn a tune that you might apply the scale. Set defined goals. I am studying jazz this year, so made a list of 20 tunes to learn and and work on one of them every day on the chords first and then the melody line. To vary after my chord memory work, I will play a fiddle tune like "Whiskey Before Breakfast". It breaks the practise time up and I find when I go back to play the jazz melody line, I am able to play it better thanks to the BG tune.

I recently spoke to a player I like and asked him how long he practised. His answer was 6 hours a day and more before a major event. There are no free lunches! Nothing beats "time behind the box". Hope this is helpful,

Cheers, Steve
