I'm not going this year. But next year, yes !
I wish you all a great Winfield this year.
I look forward to the saturday, early in the morning, before going to the contest, having a good shower, drinking a good coffee prepared by some muse, while some others play there last jamming song.

A month to go. Who is going this year? There are some folks that I only get to see once a year, at Winfield. There's a couple of groups in the line up this year too that will be good to see. It seems like the contest gets tougher each year, this year will be no different I'm sure. I always look forward to that first walk down the midway when I arrive. Being from the southeast, there is usually a briskness in the Kansas wind that is the first tinge of the changing season that is getting closer.

So who else will be there, and what do you look forward to the most?

As for the lineup, it looks pretty much like the same old crowd. There's a lot of familiar faces and some new names that may be some dynamite talent, but after 35 years of listening it takes a lot of creativity and innovation to catch my attention. Still, every few years someone comes along that blows my hat across the river. And you never know who will actually be performing given the hazards of the road ... mechanical breakdowns, gastrointestinal upsets, etc. ... sometimes the hastily formed impromptu sets are the highlight. By the end of the festival, if you haven't gotten enough music, it's your own fault.

And the weather can be a major performer at times. Hopefully they won't open the upstream gates next year.

As for the camping ... we'll see how it goes. I think the satellite campgrounds will be a feature of the landscape from here on out. Land rush has become an absurdity, what with folk lining up 2, 3 or 4 weeks before the festival camping opens. Each year our camp gets squeezed a little closer to the gate. It's to the point if we can't be assured of settling in on the high ground of the peninsula we ain't gonna deal with the anarchy.

We'll see you there.

Bill, I know as a competitor I'm not alone at looking at the roster and figuring out which performers may also judge the contest, most all of us do it. Once the schedule is released you simply see which ones aren't on stage during the time of the contest and you can usually figure out who at least a couple are out of the 5. It really doesn't matter though since everyone pretty much has their tunes selected by that time. It may actually help me decide which ones to use in the prelims versus the finals though. So far this year's line up looks pretty good, though I hardly get to see the shows much. It's always fun to watch Stephen Bennett, and watching Jake Stargel with the Greencards is good for a guitar fix. I hope the camping returns to normal this year though, I enjoy the picking in the campground more than any of the stage shows.

The last email I got from the fest has a list of performers, with more to be added.
I am looking forward to The Dusters, Green Cards, the David Munelly Band, Beppe, and Stephen Bennet..
I wonder if anyone has thoughts about the lineup so far..

In my humble abilities I have been fortunate enough to use some great picks on guitars that I do not deserve. I have several tortoise shells that dear friends gave me long ago. They are like playing with a fingernail and even shape to your fingers...
