Walnut Valley Festival and the National Guitar Championship

Winfield is a flatpicker’s paradise. From the pros on stage, to the pros and amateurs in the campground, to the fierce competition of the flatpicking contest, Winfield represents the best of the best.

Congratulations to 2010 Winfield Flatpicking Champ Jason Shaw , the 2ND EVER 3 TIME WINNER !

Don't know who can do that but IMO it's time to put a photo of the new champion Tyler Grant.

Hi folks. I uploaded a video on Christmas eve from Winfield this year. The video isn't great quality but the sound is pretty good, it was recorded on a flip video recorder from the audience. (Don't tell Rex since video cameras aren't allowed, hehe). This is one of the songs from the flatpick winner's stage performance, Sweet Georgia Brown. This is one of Brandon's contest tunes so of course he tore it up. And Tyler shows why he won, he's just plain good. I held on for dear life with these two, lol. I have the first round, then Brandon, then Tyler, and we pass it around some more. Hope you folks enjoy it as much as I did picking with these guys.

Thanx Allen. But we don't see clearly where you all 3 put you fingers to give that sound :^) ....some cooking secret ? ... :^)
Yes, the sound is good.
Happy new year.

The last email I got from the fest has a list of performers, with more to be added.
I am looking forward to The Dusters, Green Cards, the David Munelly Band, Beppe, and Stephen Bennet..
I wonder if anyone has thoughts about the lineup so far..

Bill, I know as a competitor I'm not alone at looking at the roster and figuring out which performers may also judge the contest, most all of us do it. Once the schedule is released you simply see which ones aren't on stage during the time of the contest and you can usually figure out who at least a couple are out of the 5. It really doesn't matter though since everyone pretty much has their tunes selected by that time. It may actually help me decide which ones to use in the prelims versus the finals though. So far this year's line up looks pretty good, though I hardly get to see the shows much. It's always fun to watch Stephen Bennett, and watching Jake Stargel with the Greencards is good for a guitar fix. I hope the camping returns to normal this year though, I enjoy the picking in the campground more than any of the stage shows.

A month to go. Who is going this year? There are some folks that I only get to see once a year, at Winfield. There's a couple of groups in the line up this year too that will be good to see. It seems like the contest gets tougher each year, this year will be no different I'm sure. I always look forward to that first walk down the midway when I arrive. Being from the southeast, there is usually a briskness in the Kansas wind that is the first tinge of the changing season that is getting closer.

So who else will be there, and what do you look forward to the most?

I'm not going this year. But next year, yes !
I wish you all a great Winfield this year.
I look forward to the saturday, early in the morning, before going to the contest, having a good shower, drinking a good coffee prepared by some muse, while some others play there last jamming song.
