You have thought correctly brother LJ. :-) It came from a pawn shop in Muscle Shoals, AL. A guy brought it in with four strings, said it was his dad's and he gave it to him when he died, but he needed some money. Classic story. And a classic guita...

Favorite Flatpickers
Gosh, so many greats to even single one out. I grew up on Doc Watson, Norman Blake, Dan Crary, Tony Rice, Russ Barenberg, and Dudley Murphy. The late but great Charles Sawtelle was a big influence because he played with such abandonment and impov. Taught me it was alright to go out on a limb if your roots run deep.:-) Those are the top o' the list. But, I enjoy so many great flatpickers.
Favorite Flatpicking Tunes
Again, hard to sort out favorites. Stay tuned - I may put some up on video...
Favorite Guitars
1943 Martin D-18, 1942 Gibson J 45 'bannerhead', 1997 Bougeois OM, Gallagher 71 Special, Gallagher 'Southern Star' prototype, Rockbridge slopeshoulder
Tell us more about yourself (place a Bio here if you wish)
I just turned 43, and I have been playing guitar since I was 5. I was raised in bluegrass and flatpicking guitar. I placed 3rd place at the Winfield nationals (1986 - 87). I have been the acoustic guitarist for country superstar Tim McGraw for the past 15 years - and I still love to flatpick.....

Bob--I feel like I did something I should tell you--I kind of wish I had not.
I have had a fascination, (even hard for me to understand), with the Missouri state takeover of the st. louis schools. It happened in 2006-2007. I thought it was not a good thing. A committee, co-chaired by St. Louisans Dr. William Danforth and Mrs. Frankie Freeman, was originally formed in 2006 to advise the State Board of Education about solutions to the ongoing turmoil in the St. Louis Public Schools.
The committee has been asked to take another look at what has happened since the takeover, and I wrote to one of the members, Mr. Michael Middleton, Deputy Chancellor, University of Missouri-Columbia and told him I hoped they look more closely at one particular thing which happened back in 2006....one thing I said was that it might be a subject for writing a song---I had the joy of hearing from an ex-student, and I might ask him about helping me write the song.
None of that was untrue, but school issues are getting pretty touchy all over the nation, and if Mr. Middleton should ever contact you---(I would put that as about 1 chance in 10,000)---you might want to say it was not anything which you would be interested in. It was a controversial incident. If you want more details, I will gather them for you.
I have about 35 gigs before my January 4 minor surgery---hoping things are better for me after that. I wish you continued success.

Bob, I am a little clumsy with all the facebook and e-mail ways to connect. I had several things I wanted to mention---I do look forward to someday seeing you with Tim and Faith...David Yohn just bought an 88 key Roland piano from me--he got a good deal.

I wrote up the oddest biography for myself in joining this group---I kind of don't belong, being a sax player and a piano player, but your name came up while I was talking to David Yohn. Thanks again for playing--I think it was your banjo--in my sixth grade class. (I was the teacher)

Hi!

I am a lefty. I was cruising Jerry's Lefty Guitar site today and saw he had some Baden guitars. The D's are distinctly "odd' looking. I followed a link to the Baden guitar Myspace page and, while listening to some demo's, saw that you had friended the page. Have you had the opportunity to try one of their D's? If so, what was your impression, both to the shape and the sound? I've got a Honduran RW/Red spruce Rockbridge D I got in a swap with Garry Collier. At the time it was the only lefty they had ever made. It might still be the case, for all I know!

Howdy Bob. Are you still doing Peaceful Bend. I just got back from Texas from picking up my D1A varnish, but I won't be checking that one. Got my ticket to St. L confirmed. Hope to see you there

Thanks for the reply Bob, I haven't found an H2n yet but I'm looking. Must be pretty new.I'd like to compare the two. These things can be a little intimidating for the digitally impaired like myself.

Hey Bob,
I saw your comment about about the Zoom H2 Recorder. I am attending my first acoustic camp this summer and a recorder is recommended. In classroom situations do you think this would be a good choice.

Hi Bob.

I know you are a fellow Red Bear pick fan so you might want to try out one of the new Tuff Tone picks Dave is selling. They have a different feel to the touch but they sure do sound great on the strings. I got a couple the other day and really like them a lot.

Hi Bob, I live in the DeSoto Area from '87 to '05. Played my Telecaster for a local band for eight of those years. Oh man, a '43 D-18! Nice!
