Jon, "I'm extremely new to the flatpicking world". That's a pretty aggressive practice schedule - but looks like an excellent approach for fast progress. You might want to jump ahead to Dan's #4 - it deals with most of the things on your list and mi…

Almost same EJ-19s, (lighten the treble for me, especially the high-tension G-string, which is (too) loud on my 000-28), sometimes replace the .056 low E with .059, but only on short scale 000.

Only way I can figure is that he must have been a fast worker to begin with, and now he has done so many 70's Martins that the 'rebirthing' is almost a production line operation. Also, it may be that he does it more for love that profit (running cat…

Here is a list from his web site (http://www.bryankimsey.com/) of the things included in the $1045 "70's Martin overhaul/hop-up" package. # neck reset- $250 # bone nut- $45 # new Madacascar RW bridge, 2 1/4" spacing, long drop-in saddle- $125 # uns…

I think Brian includes the the neck reset ($250) and a full (maybe only 15?) refret ($195) as part of the 1K hop up package. Apparently his price is the same with/out binding. It doesn't absolutely have to have the neck reset yet, but in a few years…

No problem. It is a '73 (SN 3484xx), unfortunately a year or two too late to be Brazilian (even tho that was the main point of 3-piece back). The lower bout has a pretty ugly scrape/ding and moderate pick wear. Needs a neck reset - OK at 6/64 at th…

Hey Kerry, unless your typing accuracy reflects your fretting accuracy - it don't matter! I will let you know if I have Rev. Kimsey do his magic on the D35 in the spring, and how it turns out. Now, it mostly hangs on the wall and doesn't get played…

Took a look it - it seems to be the perfect thing for the D35 since it is mechanically sound (no cracks, but top finish checking, dings, fret wear, etc.) Adding a 1K overhaul to a 1.5K (? my guess) guitar may well be worth more than that if it makes…

Not familiar, but will check. Thanks.

Actually yes, didn't cost anything and was lots of fun ( I'm a research physicist in my other life, so this was just some quick tinkering). As for worth it - definitely - It is a bit hard to quantify, but my best guess is it made a 4K guitar sound l…

Just a follow up.. Finally had a chance to try it out on the 000-28. First tuned to the 110 Hz-A string and turned up woofer volume until the string is vibrating wildly and starts to buzz on the frets. Then detune to the body resonance @ 106 Hz (st…

Jonathan. I agree with "shop the sound". Your are in Seattle right? Dusty Strings in Ballard carries Collings, Martin, R. Tayor, Santa Cruz, Goodall, and other smaller high-end brands like you appear to be looking for. But, not H&D. A Sharp Music Co…

Dan, Going through in detail now, and came to this point again. You diagram on p.67 makes the similarity of the C and D forms clear. Another way I have seen these box patterns named that I also find useful is name them 'string-finger' according to…

This'll tell you if you are drying out your guitar(s) - Any recommendations on the best way to keep them 'wet'. Is a climate controlled cabinet at 50% RH and stable temperature worth the trouble? Probably - how much value does a 4K guitar loose with…

BTW - Does anyone know if the Data DVD has TAB for the slow versions in Vols. 3, 4, and second half of 2 - the ones that seem to be missing at the PDF download site? (were they never transcribed??? - seems a bit odd to bring a product to market and…

Bruce,
I appreciate the tips you listed on the "weakest link" discussion forum regarding left-hand/right-hand. I'll give your ideas a try and get back to you in a few weeks. You made many good points, especially about getting "tense". Sometimes I feel the right arm starting to tense up and I know it's time to back off. Another thing that I'm working on is "breathing" / relaxing. Sometimes when I try to play at warp speed I get so into it I tend to forget to breathe, which adds to the tenseness.

Oh well, if it were easy, everyone would play like Doc Watson, Brad Davis and all the other greats. G.P.

Steve, my office is across the street from Dusty Strings in Seattle and it turns out they have a D18GE in stock. I had not even noticed it but picked it up. The neck takes some getting used to (or probably for me the bigger adjustment is tied to a 1…

So what you are talking about here Jon, is not what I started the thread for( but it IS a nice aside!) You NEED to know what your humidity is at in your house were your axe lives. That is what the Hygrometer is for. There are all kinds of threads ev…

I've never had a gauge that I've used for any of my guitars, but what I have done which only costs a few dollars is to get a travel soap box and a sponge to use as a small humidifier that I keep in my case. It's works really well and fits perfectly…
