BTW - Does anyone know if the Data DVD has TAB for the slow versions in Vols. 3, 4, and second half of 2 - the ones that seem to be missing at the PDF download site? (were they never transcribed??? - seems a bit odd to bring a product to market an...

http://www.flatpick.com/flatpickjam/ is the site for downloading PDF tabs for both the CD's and individual DVD's. The individual DVD's (vol. 1 - 4) are just that - no MP3. I think mp3 only comes on the 'Data' DVD version - it has everything all on...

Kerry, I continued to wonder about this. Particularly the 'deep scientific study' that lead ToneRite to conclude that 60 HZ was just the right frequency to maximize aging or loosening. Some coincidence that this just happens to be line frequency a...

NT4 arrived today. Not disappointed! For better or worse, what it records sounds exactly like the original (as far as my ear can tell) - can' t ask for more than that. I've attached a sample (I think), but very short as 11 seconds = 6+ Mb at 96k*2...

Hey Stu, sounds like we are coming from the same direction - most of the favorites on my play list come either from Brad Davis' Flatpick Jam DVDs (Temperance Reel, Forked Deer, Angeline the Baker, Cattle in Cane, St Anne's Reel . . .) and Orrin St...

I think I've got - just play each note of the scale with a down stroke and the its relative 3rd with an upstroke; then coming back down the scale just reverse the pair order (is this called a negative 3rd? or a relative lower 6th???), and by playi...

Stu, I have had them for about a year. They are basically an exact one time though of the tab given in the book with Adam playing on one track and some rather mushy backup on the other track. Like the tab they are 'simplest' arrangements to let yo...

P.S. I think that last summer you called the folded scales "scale sequencing" in the speed drills discussion.

Roger, I think Adam Granger came up with the term first - If you you have the FGM archives you can find an article there. But I think you already know by other names - it is just playing a small cycle of degrees for each note on the scale. The the...

Thanks Marcy, I can live with 9V batteries, and the discount prices are not tooo much more that 2 mono mics at $200 each. Besides, it looks sexy and you can see exactly how it is directed with a quick glance and obvious/easy set up for field use. ...

The Rode NT4 stereo mic is fantastic for field recording. It's a bit higher than your 200 price range but you may be able to find a used one somewhere. It runs on a 9 volt battery. It's the portable mic of choice for the Smithsonian.

All, I have a Roland R-09HR handheld digital stereo recorder. Love it, but I think the built in microphones are not as good as the recording capability (it will do up to 96 kHz, 24-bit stereo). So, do any of you members of this group have recomme...

P.S. Another thing I do for specific songs (rather than a generic drill) works on the assumption that you can play the given tune reasonably well at a slow-moderate speed. Then record yourself and loop play it back with slow-down/speed-up software...

Byron, the one single drill that I have found that dramatically increased by left-right coordination as well as overall speed and really solid right-hand up-down smoothness (even at high speed) is the folded G-scale as given in Dan's Flatpicking e...

Bruce,
I appreciate the tips you listed on the "weakest link" discussion forum regarding left-hand/right-hand. I'll give your ideas a try and get back to you in a few weeks. You made many good points, especially about getting "tense". Sometimes I feel the right arm starting to tense up and I know it's time to back off. Another thing that I'm working on is "breathing" / relaxing. Sometimes when I try to play at warp speed I get so into it I tend to forget to breathe, which adds to the tenseness.

Oh well, if it were easy, everyone would play like Doc Watson, Brad Davis and all the other greats. G.P.
