Curt Fields replied to Dave Engel's discussion Picking up the banjo?
"Dave, You must have been at the Darrington festival. That was a great event. If you want to learn the banjo to do some simple back up work and to play some simple tunes, you can apply what you currently know on the guitar to the banjo fairly…"

Favorite Flatpicking Tunes
I enjoy flatpickin' the old gospel hymns and bluegrass gospel music, as well as pickin' traditional bluegrass music.

I like to back up singers and prefer to improvise solos "on the fly". I don't use tablature and prefer to play by ear.
Favorite Guitars
My primary guitar is a 2008 Martin D-18GE, and I own a '97 Taylor 710CE, a 1946 Gibson LG-2 and a 1972 Fender Telecaster Custom Deluxe (forgive me).
Tell us more about yourself (place a Bio here if you wish)
I live in Kennewick, Washington and have been playing guitar off and on since the mid 1970's. I made the leap into bluegrass and flatpicking in the late '80's.

I also play a 1980 Gibson Mastertone 5-String banjo.

I play in several bluegrass groups in our local area including the Columbia River Bluegrass Band ( http://columbiariver.us ).

"Very nice, clean, rendition of this old civil war song, and the tone of your guitars is great! (You know that Elvis recorded this in the 1950's as "Love Me Tender?")  Wish I had  ason to pick with!"
