I ordered my copy of vol. 4 today. I can´t wait to get it! It seems like a really good book. I haven´t ordered vol.3 yet since I have so much fiddletune material allready from other books. Do I really need to study vol. 3 to move one to vol. 4?
Like most everyone else that is "self-taught", I've developed all the bad habits that you could possibly develop. The first two volumes in this series have been a great help in undoing some of the damage. I particularly appreciate that the audio s...

Profile Information

Tell us more about yourself (place a Bio here if you wish)
I am the editor and publisher of Flatpicking Guitar Magazine and have been playing acoustic music on guitar, banjo, mandolin, and bass for nearly thirty years. I've owned and operated my own publishing company since 1988 and owned FGM Records since 1997.

I was born and raised in Northern Virginia, graduated from Annandale High School in 1978, and entered the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland. In 1982 I graduated from the Naval Academy with a BS in Mathematics and was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in the Marine Corps. I served as a Communications Officer in the Marine Corps until 1992. While in the service I also earned a MS in Electrical Engineering from the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, California.

During my time in the service I began publishing a martial arts newsletter, which eventually led to me starting my own publishing company in 1988 while I was still in the service. The small newsletter gradually grew into a journal, which focused on the Chinese internal martial art of Pa Kua Chang (also romanized Ba Gua Zhang).

After leaving the Marine Corps in 1992, having achieved the rank of Captain, I began publishing full time. In addition to publishing the Pa Kua Chang Journal, over the next five years I also published eight books and ten instructional video on various Chinese martial arts subjects. After my first daughter, Emily, was born in January of 1996, I thought that the four to five week-long research trips to China would be hard on my new family and I decided to start a new publication which would be more family oriented. In September of 1996 the first issue of Flatpicking Guitar Magazine (flatpick.com) was published. In June of 1997, my second daughter, Sara, was born.

My two children, and the guitar magazine, were all born while I was living in Monterey, California. In 1998 I decided to move the business to Pulaski, Virginia. Although the business office remains in Pulaski, I moved back to California in 2005 and now live in Rocklin, just east of Sacramento. My aunt, Connie Miller and her sister Jackie, run the day-to-day operations of the business office while I focus on publishing the magazine and producing music CDs and instructional books and DVDs for acoustic guitar players.

In conjunction with publishing Flatpicking Guitar Magazine, I also own FGM Records (fgmrecords.com) and Flatpicking Mercantile (flatpickingmercantile.com). Currently the record label, which specializes in various styles of acoustic guitar music, has produced 25 CDs and 4 live concert DVDs. Additionally we have produced instructional material for guitar and sell it through Flatpicking Mercantile. To date Flatpicking Mercantile has released four instructional books and nine instructional DVDs.

I also play the upright bass with a number of touring bands. For the past several years I have worked primarily with the Brad Davis Band.

I am in a committed relationship with my girlfriend Cindy Kapper.

Flatpicking Essentials, Volume 1: Rhythm, Bass Runs & Fill Licks

You FGM subscribers may remember that back in the "Pioneers" issue of Flatpicking Guitar Magazine I laid out a step-by-step flatpicking learning method that followed the chronological development of the style. This method started with a solid foundation in the rhythm guitar styles of flatpicking's early pioneers--a style that includes a liberal use of bass runs and rhythm fill licks, combined with rhythmic strums.

I have just released Volume 1 of the Eight Volume Essentials of FlatpicContinue

Dear Dan,

I'm sending a belated Thank You for the kind response to my questions about guitar microphones you sent me on JUNE 6th - I've been in the process of moving from Lago Vista TX to Burleson TX to teach Flatpicking guitar at Vickie Lynn's Music Shop in Cleburne TX. Also to teach elementary school. Vickie's a talented picker, pianist and music store owner for 30 years. She created a violin/fiddle program for her elementary kids about 9 years ago and takes her students to perform at Branson every year and wins. We'd like to begin a Guitar camp in Cleburne to introduce and educate young'ns about Flatpicking and Bluegrass. Thanks again, Dan....for everything. God Bless.

Hi Dan, I wanted to say thanks for setting up this sight first. I have some questions about how Bryan Sutton and David Grier are getting this incredible tone on recordings. I've been recording for years and I have my own thoughts about it but was wanting to get some feedback from one of these guys or a good engineer thats seen what there doing. Am I hearing one mic, or two, or three or what? What type of mics, Distance, Direction, Compression being used, eq if there is any? I no there using great Guitars and their technic for pulling tone out of the instrument is also into account. I guess maybe I might just need some conformation that I'm doing all I can to get the best tone. I'm wanting to get some recording done of myself and I need to get some of these issues worked out so I can focus on playing something good. Not all this Technical stuff. Help!! Please Thankyou

Dan,
I just ordered 3 volumes of back issues. I'm curious, when did they start having CDs? I think one of the volumes I ordered doesn't have any. That's fine, the surprise should be fun. On another note, I met Lance Miller the other day. Nice guy, had the March/April issue out on his band's table.

Take Care,
~Ty

Dan,
The May'June '09 issue may be the best so far. I suspect it will become a collectable. It restimulated my playing, revived tunes I had not played in a while, and motivated me to "update" others. Keep up the good work! Thanks again.

FAQ, I didn't see a place with one so I have one for you, is there a way to back channel or send a message to a member say to inquire about an event they discussed or is the forum the only way to contact folks. Even with an old posting?

I SO agree that most of our technique builders are already in the tunes we play. However one I give my students (and use myself) is scale sequencing. Starting with a G major scale, giving each note a number (1, 2, 3 = G, A, B etc.) A USEFUL seque...
