Tell us more about yourself (place a Bio here if you wish)
I am the editor and publisher of Flatpicking Guitar Magazine and have been playing acoustic music on guitar, banjo, mandolin, and bass for nearly thirty years. I've owned and operated my own publishing company since 1988 and owned FGM Records since 1997.

I was born and raised in Northern Virginia, graduated from Annandale High School in 1978, and entered the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland. In 1982 I graduated from the Naval Academy with a BS in Mathematics and was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in the Marine Corps. I served as a Communications Officer in the Marine Corps until 1992. While in the service I also earned a MS in Electrical Engineering from the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, California.

During my time in the service I began publishing a martial arts newsletter, which eventually led to me starting my own publishing company in 1988 while I was still in the service. The small newsletter gradually grew into a journal, which focused on the Chinese internal martial art of Pa Kua Chang (also romanized Ba Gua Zhang).

After leaving the Marine Corps in 1992, having achieved the rank of Captain, I began publishing full time. In addition to publishing the Pa Kua Chang Journal, over the next five years I also published eight books and ten instructional video on various Chinese martial arts subjects. After my first daughter, Emily, was born in January of 1996, I thought that the four to five week-long research trips to China would be hard on my new family and I decided to start a new publication which would be more family oriented. In September of 1996 the first issue of Flatpicking Guitar Magazine (flatpick.com) was published. In June of 1997, my second daughter, Sara, was born.

My two children, and the guitar magazine, were all born while I was living in Monterey, California. In 1998 I decided to move the business to Pulaski, Virginia. Although the business office remains in Pulaski, I moved back to California in 2005 and now live in Rocklin, just east of Sacramento. My aunt, Connie Miller and her sister Jackie, run the day-to-day operations of the business office while I focus on publishing the magazine and producing music CDs and instructional books and DVDs for acoustic guitar players.

In conjunction with publishing Flatpicking Guitar Magazine, I also own FGM Records (fgmrecords.com) and Flatpicking Mercantile (flatpickingmercantile.com). Currently the record label, which specializes in various styles of acoustic guitar music, has produced 32 CDs and 6 live concert DVDs. Additionally we have produced instructional material for guitar and sell it through Flatpicking Mercantile. To date Flatpicking Mercantile has released fourteen instructional books and twelve instructional DVDs.

I also play the upright bass with a number of touring bands. For the past several years I have worked primarily with the Brad Davis Band and I have toured as a duo, playing guitar, with Tim May.

Tim May, Brad Davis, and I conduct workshops all around the United States, about 70 per year. To find out more about these workshops, please see our workshop schedule at the following web address: http://www.flatpick.com/workshops

Thanks Dan!
I just got home from a little gig recon trip to Wichita!
I can't hang out with all those pickers that come to town in September and not have to get out there and give it the old college try!
We'll keep a light in the window for you!

Hey man ya this is a pretty cool thing you made here. As far as suggestions. Let's see what about a one stop contest and festival directory but more specifically contests. And maybe a builder database and or a classifieds section.
