I'm in need of a repair guy for my '51 Martin 000-21

Jim Grainger at Custom Fretted Instruments in Sparta, TN. Call him at 931-657-2398. He's one of the best vintage Martin guys around and he's fair and not so swamped with work that it'll take years ...

What do you do to get out of a rut?

Whenever I get into a rut, I listen to music that is totally outside the realm of anything I'm playing. Some Woody Herman or maybe a little bit of Deep Purple or something. That usually ignites a l...

All of them. Some favorites are Big Sciota, Blackberry Blossom, Monroe's Hornpipe, Beaumont Rag and Wheel Hoss. But there are so many more. There's no way to express my favorite tunes. It depends on the day.

Tell us more about yourself (place a Bio here if you wish)
I was born in the 50's in a small town in the Berkshire Hills of Massachusetts. I studied electronics and electrical installation in high school. I went to college for about five years after I got out of the service (Air Force and Army) and now I make guitar picks. My wife and I own the Red Bear Trading Company and our guitar picks are considered by many to be the best alternative to genuine turtle shell.

I find musical inspiration for my playing in a lot of places. My musical taste is pretty diverse. I like a good listen to fusion, rock and classical as well as bluegrass, folk and country. I love the sound of a Strat through Marshall stacks, and I love the sound of my D-18GE on a nice afternoon out in the yard. I'm a huge Les Paul fan (both the guitar and the man) and I also love the sound of a Gretsch hollow body with Brian Setzer behind the pick.

I live on the edge. I tear off mattress tags without regard.

I like sitting in a little boat on a little lake catching big trout. Fortunately, I have all three available to me within a minute's notice. We have a little aluminum boat, there's a little lake about 15 miles from here, and that lake has some seriously big trout. I like to try and catch them when I'm not making picks, which is most of the time, it seems. Anyway, if you're ever in the vicinity of White Pine County, Nevada, come on over to Ely and we'll pick a few, then go fishin!

Oh, I forgot to mention - I'm a HUGE Red Sox fan. I was born and raised in Massachusetts, and I have always been a BoSox fan, good times or bad . . . and the good times are nice indeed! Damn those Yankees!

My Gear

I have a great Martin D-18GE that my pal Bryan Kimsey performed his magic mods on. I also have a new guitar made by John Osthoff, a New England luthier. This guitar is like a large OM. It's really a superb instrument. Pics of it are below. I also have a Strat, a Taylor 355, a mahogany/addy dread that I made myself, and a little Kentuky mandolin. My amps are a mint 1966 Vibro-Champ and a Tweed Deluxe that I built myself. I'm working on a Blackface Twin style amp now. My beloved Bourgeois OM-V is now in the capable hands of my friend Bobby Minner.

Hi Dave.

Got my Tuff Tone picks today and I really like them a lot. I can not tell any difference in the tone of these compared to my standard Red Bear picks. Great product.

LJ,

They are indeed. I haven't had the chance yet to write them up over here. We're as busy as can be. These new picks are made of a different material that makes them very strong. They won't break. The tone is there, and the feel, while different from our standard line, is still good. They have great drop-tone and we've tested the heck out of them. They passed with flying colors and are now available in the shopping cart on our site at www.redbeartrading.com. THey are only available in the buff color in heavy gauge at the moment, but we're working on that.

Hey Mike,

Thanks for the note. I'm glad you like our picks. Welcome aboard!

Dave

Hi Dave.
I am pretty interested in the new Tuff Tone picks you are showing on the Red Bear site. Do they produce a tone much like the standard Red Bear picks I have come to know and love? They look pretty interesting to me and I am a sucker for a great pick.

Hey Dave,
I was checking out picks galore website and noticed your Red Bear picks so I thought I'd give them a try. I was a little skeptical but thought I would check them out due to the following they're getting. I am well pleased. Everything they're built up to be. Thanks for a great product. Mike Pullen

Hey Dave,

Hope you had a great Holiday and Happy New Year. We're getting geared up to get back into some music with shows and hopefully into the recording studio.

He was almost a picker. He started messing with a banjo a bit but it just didn't do it for him. I have three boys and can't get any of them interested in picking. I nearly had one of them 'guilt tripped' into trying but I let him off the hook. :)

I SO agree that most of our technique builders are already in the tunes we play. However one I give my students (and use myself) is scale sequencing. Starting with a G major scale, giving each note a number (1, 2, 3 = G, A, B etc.) A USEFUL seque...
