Ear Learning

This group is for those interested in learning to play what they hear. All levels welcome - hope the advanced can help the beginners. TAB'ers are welcome too, whether looking to change their ways or simply interested in the discussions.

Profile Information

Favorite Flatpickers
Apart from Jake and Jeff Cohen (who are both brilliant), and an un-named guy I saw on YouTube, I don't know many flatpickers yet!
Favorite Flatpicking Tunes
Learning 'Cripple Creek', 'Temperance Reel', 'Turkey in the Straw', Presently trying to learn 'Whiskey Before Breakfast' by ear as every piece of sheet music I find is different from the last. I refuse to learn tab.
Favorite Guitars
It may not be the best but I really like my Yamaha FG-450SA. It has a good bright sound to it. Now the proud owner of a Martin HD-28 and love the quality difference.
Tell us more about yourself (place a Bio here if you wish)
I've been learning mandolin (Moon A+) for the past three years which has given me greater understanding of music and a resurgence to try to learn and play my guitar. Stumbled upon flatpicking by chance on YouTube and didn't know it was even possible. Now I can't get enough of it!

Broken Duck!

A couple of weeks ago at the Bluegrass jamming session in Lauries Bar, Glasgow, I stepped forward for the first time and broke my duck. Took my geetar since I had just bought a new swish padded gig-bag and with a view to accompanying myself on some songs since, atm, I cannot play chords on the mandolin and sing at the same time.

Started with a simple…

David- Nice to hear from you (all the way from Scotland) and thanks for the comment. You are right, nothing better! All four of us are in our mid-60's and we started playing together 45 years ago. Although we lost touch for many years, we are back at it since 2001, and enjoying the music and the friendship more than ever. All the best, and keep us posted on your flatpicking journey... Dave

David, Thanks for the listen. I really like "Whiskey Before Breakfast." I have kind of blended lots of different versions to one that I like to pick (and that I'm able to pick). I learned "Hunting the Buffalo" from a great dulcimer player named Butch Ross and tried to imitate fiddle licks and banjo licks from an old-time string band named Rattletrap in my version. My wife is backing me up on a bowed dulcimer and gets a real nice fiddle type sound. We have a lot of fun. That's definitely what old time music is all about!
