Hi David,
There is alot of things to do to advance your picking. First thing is to relax and breathe. Sounds simple but it is a real tough thing to do when you focusing on other aspects of your playing. It is the first thing that gets overlooked when a player starts working on an unfamiliar tune or a unfamiliar way to phrase the music. Next thing to work on is making sure what you want to say musically with the tune. Get the basic melody first...non negotiable...and build from there. If you listen to the real giants of flatpicking, it's the one common denominator that they have over the rest of the players out there. I am going back through my tunes and I realized "man, I need to change". So I'm changing. Would it be possible to call me and I can guide you through specifics to tailor your needs. My phone number is (503)730-0005. You'll learn alot from me..I promise. All my best, Steve

Thanks Steve,

I will call you tomorrow then at 12;00 your time and 3:00 my time. I travel in my work so my schedule is flexible and noon your time is good.
I dont want to take up much of your time since you are heading to Wintergrass Festival, so to give you a heads up I can finger pick a few songs and flat pick a few like wiskey Before Breakfast but not well, I just mutter through them, at home not in a jam session.
Simply put I dont know how to practice to build right hand cooridnation or a lighter left hand.

I do play good chick-a-boom rythym, from consistently going to a jam session with top notch musicians that will let ya know if your out of time.

thanks for your time Steve!
I will speak with you tomorrow.

respectfully
Dave Gilstrap

Bob Mesher replied to Bob Cron's discussion Norman's Preferences
"All I remember was when he had a Martin with flush frets on it (i.e. just markers for a guitar that was designed for slide only) and he had it converted for flat picking. "
