So what happened, I took advantage of a free offer that FGM were running - a copy of the magazine, the associated CD, and a copy of a flat-picking CD too. All for some ridiculously low price that…Continue

Brief Biography

I started playing some 35 years ago, back in the day of Sex Pistols and hot summers. First gig I went to was the Pirates featuring the late great Telecaster-wielding Mick Green. The next half a dozen were all punk gigs, but very rapidly I discovered I prefered old blues. Got into Robert Johnson and Mississippi John Hurt and bought a bunch Stefan Grossman's books - replete with flexi discs. I still have them, although I no longer have a turntable. Maybe one day...

Before I ever picked up a guitar I was exposed to Johnny Cash and Merle Haggard and Creedence Clearwater Revival and Jerry Lee and Elvis - my father's music. It's remained with me all my life. Did the obligatory heavy metal thing, then the blues rock thing, eventually got a pretty neat Rn'Bband together. R'n'B in the old-fashioned sense - Doctor Feelgood rather than Usher! From there it was Cajun and country and these days it's old time rock'n'roll.

More appropriate for this site, parallel to all of this activity was - and is - a huge love of acoustic music, both flat-picked and finger-picked. Huge Django fan and love Clarence White. For years I couldn't get enough of the New Grass Revival! First CD I ever bought was the Deliverance Soundtrack and first DVD was a Doc Watson workshop. The older I get the more I love the acoustic and think that's where my future gigs may lie. Getting too old to rock'n'roll! Well, maybe not quite yet - but I figure if I start focussing on flat-picking properly now, by the time I am too old to rock I may have some other strings to my bow. I also love jazz - especially swing - and studied at the original Jimmy Bruno Guitar Institute online - which was absolutely brilliant and really opened up my ears and eyes as to how to play over changes. Jimmy's now opened up a revised version of his school and I'll be re-joining just as soon... well, alas, the recession is having just a little to say about that at the moment.

So, as you can tell, I pretty much love all guitar music. Jack of all trades, master of nothing at all, you could say.

Guitarwise I have a cheap Yamaha FG335 dread from about 1980. It's very mellow and although hasn't got a solid top its ageing nicely. Would love a Martin one day (of course, I would) but I suspect that day is a while off. Got a Gitane DG250M for those poor attempts at gypsy swing and a Fenix archtop for my tentative forays into jazz. Electric-wise I have a '79 strat that I've just about worn out and is desperate need of a refret, an 82 Tokai Breezysound (pink paisley) and a Gretsch 5127 for those rock'n'roll gigs.

Derek,

Well, that's just about the grandest entrance I've seen around here. It's a great site with a relatively small and friendly community - welcome. Love your East Tennessee Blues - keep posting!

Hi Derek, The Tanglewood and Salt Creek sound great! Could you post me a copy of Salt Creek on the private line - your starting version is the one I learned, albeit at a somewhat slower pace - it would be nice to have a copy that is not subject to the limitations of the local player here.

Cheers, ganon

Any news on this CD as promoted on (I think) Podcast # 46 ? Can't find it listed on the site and that podcast whetted my appetite! Cheers, Derek
