Great job Karl! That's one of those tunes I'd like to build some speed on, along with several dozen others (too many tunes, not enough "free time"!) I don't know the fellow playing mandolin, but kudos to him, too. The way he was playing it reminds m…

Favorite Flatpicking Tunes
Drowsy Maggie, Spotted Pony, Congress Reel, Turkey Knob, Whiskey Before Breakfast, Cripple Creek, Over the Waterfall, Eleanore, White Face, Jerusalem Ridge, The Tamlin (good to play when you're feeling intense!!), Yellow Barber, and all kinds of obscure tunes I learned from Robin K. like Planxty George Brabazon, Possum up a Gum Stump, and Flannery's Dream
Favorite Guitars
2008 Bob Thompson Honduran Rosewood Dreadnought

Favorite Guitars

1975 Martin D-35

This guitar is special not because of tone, action, or any of that business - it's special because it belonged to my Grandfather. I heard it played a million times before I ever even started learning to play. Had to have a lot of work done to it when I first got it, but it was worth the effort - this one is a "keeper"!

2008 Bob Thompson Dreadnought

I picked this up in July 2008 - Honduran Rosewood, Adirondack Spruce, curly maple binding, sounds and plays terrific! Bob is a local West Virginia guitar maker - Robin Kessinger and Robert Shafer both play his guitars now, and spoke very highly of them - so that was good enough for me!

2008 Vandalia Flatpick Contest video

I have uploaded a video from this year's Vandalia Gathering flatpick contest. This is Adam Hager playing "Cottage Hill" and "Temptation Rag", 2 tunes I had not heard until this year. I didn't hear them announce the winner of the flatpick contest, but I was told that Adam won it this year, so that's the story I'm sticking with - he did a great job on these tunes! Here's the video.

Hi Jay,
Excellent sound quality on that recording of Robin playing the songs we learned at the workshop. Hope all is well with you. I'm still in love with that Thompson "Dreadnaught Blonde"

Thanks Jay! That other guy's name is Spencer Strickland. He is currently playing in a duo with Gerald Anderson. You may know Gerald through the name Wayne Henderson. Gerald and Wayne used to make instruments together back when Wayne first started. Now Gerald makes his own. Spencer is his apprentice and has made a few guitars himself. He really is like Robert Shafer on mandolin. He is absolutely amazing. I'm thrilled that I got to play with him.

Great meeting you at Stringbreak this weekend. I told Bob about the four Thompsons in the room at one time. All he said was "is that right?" Wanted to know who the owners were and I said Jay, Robin, Mark and myself. But mine was the purtiest...lol. Big fun, can't wait til next year. Thanks for the add...btw

Hey, Jay! Thanks for posting about the Twin Falls event. I went to the first one a few years ago (2007?), and really enjoyed it. Were you there that year? Scott did a real good job pulling it together, and the Inn was very nice. Great to be able to have that much time directly with Robin, Wayne and Jim. If I did meet you, sorry I don't recall. Wish I could make it back again...

Enjoy!

Hi Jay,
Thanks so much for purchasing the New CD! I'm glad your enjoying it too.
That's fine ordering the MP3 I would do the same.
Hope we can get together and pick some day soon!
Dan Miller of Flatpicking Guitar Magazine came out this weekend and we picked a lot with Peter McLaughlin . Dan made a Podcast interview and has us play a tune together that will soon be on the Flatpicking Network.
Thanks again,
Your Friend,
Greg

That's right... I'm an official Staff Musician at Augusta's Guitar week this year. I've never been, but I'm sure I'll have a lot of fun. I hope to see you there! Maybe I'll see you at Vandalia?

I want that guitar, Jay! I want that Thompson. I hear that the Kessinger model is a bit tougher to play than the Shafer model. What do you think? (***how much did it cost?****)

Believe me, Karl, I will treasure those memories for at least the next 3 hours, at which time the time will catch up with them!

I've never had a gauge that I've used for any of my guitars, but what I have done which only costs a few dollars is to get a travel soap box and a sponge to use as a small humidifier that I keep in my case. It's works really well and fits perfectly…
