Tell us more about yourself (place a Bio here if you wish)
I currently live in Franklin, TN having moved from the Pacific North Coast of Bayside, CA to be closer to the music scene in Nashville. I went to High School in Alexandria, Virginia where I started flatpicking around 1974. I picked up my first "good" guitar (D-28) in 1976 and haven't stopped collecting the great flatpicking guitars since. I did have to sell my 1937 Prewar Herringbone to buy a house in the mid '80's, heartbreak, but acquired a 1942 D-18 about 10 years later, and a couple of great Collings in the past few years.

I got to perform at the World's Fair in Knoxville, Tennessee in 1982 and the same year was runner up in the National Mountain Music Festival that I entered reluctantly with my good friend Roger Helton who is a great musician currently working out of the East Tennessee area. I graduated from Humbodlt State University in 1983 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration and the next week got married to my current wife Kathy. That same year, I opened a concert that Doc and Merle Watson put on with Mark O'Connor which I must say has always been the gig I'm most proud of performing. I am a retired California Highway Patrol Officer as of April 2010 so now I can pursue music as my full time job. I have recorded four instrumental CD's to date of primarily flatpicking guitar and mandolin that you can check out at CD baby. Two of my original mandolin songs, on my "Lost in the Woods" CD, were nominated as "Best Roots Instrumental" at the Just Plain Folks Awards" in 2006. My Christmas CD "12 Christmas Picks" was advertised in Bluegrass Unlimited Magazine October, November, and December '08 issues.

My newest CD "Nothing Left To Break" was released in May 2015 and is my first vocal CD featuring 14 of my original songs introducing me as a songwriter. They are all acoustic guitar driven tunes but also feature the mandolin, dobro, banjo and pedal steel guitar.

There are some auido clips on my cdbaby website if you are interested in hearing me pick a few tunes.

Tim May Workshop/House Concert on 04/09/2009

Thanks to Tim May for the successful flatpicking workshop held at Walker Guitar Company. I have been contacted by several people who told me how much they learned and enjoyed Tim's teaching style. The concert that evening was also well received! I had a blast picking tunes with Tim and hope to do it again soon.

Those of you who missed this event, really missed out! Anyone in the Nashville area October 22-24 can attend The Nashville Guitar Academy which will feature Tim May and Pat Flynn as… Continue

Let me know when you're in or around Central VA.  I'm pretty close to Charlottesville.  We can play some John Denver and Croce for old time sake, and I'd be happy to provide some back-up rhythm or 5 string on some of the fine flat picking I hear on your CD's.
