I went to a music college as a guitarist and I play more banjo than i do guitar these days. It's a different beast, but like flatpicking, once you get that right hand moving you're golden. I say go for it. It was the best decision I ever made…

I've never had a gauge that I've used for any of my guitars, but what I have done which only costs a few dollars is to get a travel soap box and a sponge to use as a small humidifier that I keep in my case.
It's works really well and fits perfectly…
