String muting with picking hand?

I'm reevaluating my technique and I'm wondering if it is 'proper' or wise to mute individual stings w/ the picking hand at times. Do you do this? Have you better ideas? For example, I play and open D (4th) sting followed by a fretted note on the G (3rd) string (say third finger, third fret). My tendency in this situation would be to use the upper edge of my picking thumb by the knuckle to mute the 4th string as I am picking the note on the third. This seems to suit me fairly well for the most…See More

Tell us more about yourself (place a Bio here if you wish)
Since about 1983 have played bass guitar and guitar in many bands and styles from punk rock to avant guarde jazz/rock. Interest in Old Time and Bluegrass took over in late 1990's. Mostly just an in-home picker these days.

I also have a growing repertoire of ol-timey fingerstyle tunes and am working on my singing. I have battled carpal tunnel the last couple years that has slowed my development. But got that sucker in a holding pattern and I'm not giving up!

I play some mandolin too. I would love to find a fiddle player to back up. ...or open back banjo, or mando.
