My Tribute to David Bromberg.

David Bromberg

David Bromberg is a guy that we all here on this site should all know well, and he's quite a guitarist.  David also happens to be the world's single greatest authority of American Made Violins.  I thoroughly enjoyed the issue of Flatpicking Guitar dedicated to him, and if you did as well, then I think that you might also…

The Santa Cruz Tony Rice Guitars.

I figure that everyone here knows all about Tony Rice's 1935 Martin D 28, and the history of the thing - but I wrote this article for people who might not know about it, and I hope maybe some folks here at flatpicking Guitar online will enjoy this as well.

It's really more about the Santa Cruz Tony Rice models though.

If you've never seen the super clip of Nine Pound Hammer presented here with Tony and the some of the best and most known bluegrass…

The Gibson Nick Lucas Model Guitar.

http://hubpages.com/_2f6iz9aonqwpc/hub/The-Gibson-Nick-Lucas-Special-a-Twelve-Fret-Beauty

Here's a guitar that falls out of the tradition of flatpickers and flatpicking, but by now probably everyone who loves stormin' Norman Blake like I do knows that Norman Blake is doing lots of great playing, and making lots of beautiful music with one of these.  If my memory serves me…

American Icon, The Martin D-28.

http://hubpages.com/hub/The-Martin-D-28-An-American-Acoustic-Guitar-Icon-and-Its-Many-Fine-Imitations

I tried to do the great guitar from the great company justice here, and covered a few of the well known, and loved knock off versions as well. I've owned a D-28 vintage reissue before, and loved it; but my Santa Cruz Model D. . . .will never be on the…

What makes a great guitar for flatpickers?

http://hubpages.com/hub/High-End-Acoustic-Guitars-For-Flatpickers

I submitted the blog, or "hub" above over at hubpages.com, where I write about every and anything. Music, however, is one of my favorite topics. Guitars and guitar music specifically-and to further narrow it down, fine acoustic flat tops, for flatpicking. I sort of hit the basics-but there's so much more to say. I'll do a follow up sooner or… Continue

Deluge

We have a saying here that you wait for ages for one bus and then three come along at the same time!

This morning while watching with interest but growing frustration at the developing discussions on the new Flatpicking Essentials Group not able to understand what the hell they were talking about (because I didn't have and couldn't get the first volume for myself due to computer problems - FG Mercantile wouldn't process my order because I didn't have…

My New Red Bear

Got my new Red Bear in yesterday's mail.

It's got a wonderful feel and though I don't feel the "grips", it's better having them where they are than up as high as they used to be. The roundness of this "F" shape seems to make a smoother sound than the "C" I've been playing with lately. The "C" may be slightly louder, being pointier as it is, but the new "F" seems to bring out fewer extraneous noises.

I like a completely… Continue

This issue includes 2 versions each of 20 standard fiddle tunes (one beginner's version, one intermediate/advanced version). Not a lot of text in this issue and I stripped out many of the ads. This is nearly all music and they are the tunes that we love to play the most!

And all of the contributors to this issue, save one, are guest… Continue

Flatpicking Essentials, Volume 1: Rhythm, Bass Runs & Fill Licks

You FGM subscribers may remember that back in the "Pioneers" issue of Flatpicking Guitar Magazine I laid out a step-by-step flatpicking learning method that followed the chronological development of the style. This method started with a solid foundation in the rhythm guitar styles of flatpicking's early pioneers--a style that includes a liberal use of bass runs and rhythm fill licks, combined with rhythmic strums.

I have just released Volume 1 of the Eight Volume Essentials… Continue

Great FGM DVD-Kilby, Davis and May

Hi Flatpickers,

I recently bought a DVD produced by Flatpicking Guitar Magazine called "Live In Kansas City-Cody Kilby, Brad Davis and Tim May. I rarely say anything like this but this DVD is a must have for every flatpicker. It's just fantastic! I watched it on an airplane with headphones and this DVD was so good I forgot where I was. I actually started clapping after one of the songs! Luckily the people sitting nearby chuckled.

I'm not kidding, it's that good! Everybody needs to buy… Continue

Free Flatpicking Lessons

For the past several years Flatpicking Gutiar Magazine has sent out a monthly email newsletter to our email list. This newsletter has usually included a free flatpick lesson, as well as flatpick news, and sale events at flatpickingmercantile.com. In the past our monthly flatpicking lessons have been from a variety of sources and were quite haphazard. Starting in May 2008 Mickey Abraham, who was featured in our May/June 2008 issue, joins our staff as the regular email newsletter… Continue
