Hot Flatpicking Guitar with Mike Cramer, with Special Guest Russ Barenberg

Build your repertoire of flatpicking fiddle tunes and learn how to develop songs with variation and improvisation. Students will have the opportunity to use a number of different tunes to learn important left and right hand techniques, as well as discuss music theory, as it relates to flatpicking guitar. Faculty member Mike Cramer gave us a taste of what we could expect in his seminar: “One of the activities we’ll do is take a standard fiddle tune, such as Billy in the Lowground, and explore new ways to play it. To accomplish this we will explore a technique commonly refered to as cascades or floaties. By incorporating this technique, you will be able to keep multiple strings ringing simultaneously. Imagine, at your next jam session, instead of sounding like a type-writer punching notes out, Billy in the Lowground sounds as if it’s being played by a harp.” Hot Flatpicking Guitar will be held in our Nashville, TN location at Vanderbilt University from July 5th through July 10th, with special guest Russ Barenberg.

"I have settled on the BlueChip CT55. The BlueChip picks play very smooth and fast, with little pick noise. By the way, I use their thumb picks as well- best I've ever used."
