p.s. i've made a ning network for the fiddle campers. we'll see how it goes, obviously it's the people who make these network things work. here's the link: fiddlecamp.ning.com
I use Wegen 140 large triangle picks, and the D'addario J17 strings. Usually in the studio, I use tortoise shell picks.

In answer to the pick... i have no idea what kind I use. Somebody gave me one at a festival several years back, and i havent been able to put it down. Its rounded on all three sides... if that helps to ID it...

Well, i had planned on going to winfield all year... practiced like a madman... tore the callouses off my fingers.... you know.... but stuff recently came up, and i cant go. At least not this year.
I play a Collings D-1. I just got it eight months ago. Oh, and fly-by is one of my pieces... I just wrote that a couple weeks ago.
good picking! Talk soon, i hope?

Hey Jed, Thanks for the welcome. I mainly use a Bluegrass 1.0 white w/ holes. I have also used the 1.2, but went back to the 1.0. Mainly chose it, because it was the closest to the size and shape of my older picks.
BTW, has anyone tried to "rough up" a Wegen to get a better grip? You better have a grinder!

Sorry I didn't respond sooner. I just saw your comment. I was looking for the TF Shape Pick in a 150 or 1.5 size. I did see them on a website one time but the owner told me they were a special order and he was sold out. I use the TF 140's now in black but would love to have them a little thicker. I have tried to email Wegen recently but I either am not getting through to him or maybe he is too busy. I have been trying the email address on his website. Is there any other email address that you know of?
I got an email back from him, so I guess I will try to place an order on his website and see how that goes. Thanks for your help.

Thanks for the welcome, Jed. I use either a 1.0 or 1.2 Wegan Bluegrass w/ holes and the speed bevel edge.
As far as roughing them up, I have tried everything short of a dremel tool or a grinder...nothing worked. I did try some gorilla snot last year and one time I either used too much or didn't play very long after I used it, because some of it dried on the pick. Now it feels "roughed up" w/ ridges and craters and is definitely not as slick. Sometimes, that's my favorite pick. I may experiment on a couple more and see how it turns out. Art
"I recently came across a steel string parlor guitar made by P. Benson, in Minneapolis. It's really a nice little instrument--well built, comfortable, very much like an old Martin 00-18 (mahogany, slotted headstock, pyramid bridge, ladder…"
"My gear is much better than my skill - for straight flatpickin', I play a Martin D-18 Authentic 1937. My go-to guitar for just about everything else (and it flatpicks just fine, thank you) is my Huss & Dalton D-RH with a Red Spruce top.…"
"Hey Craig. Thanks for the kind comment. The credit for this version should really go To Steve Kaufman who's arrangement it is. Good luck with your bluegrass studies, it's wonderful music and great fun to play. I look forward to…"
"Derek: Mike above is teaching me blue grass and showed me this site. Fantastic rendition by you of this great song. Thanks for sharing. I'm off to Mike's to practice!!!!"
"I have a Guild Bluegrass D40 made in the original factory at Hoboken that has been with me since 1964
I also have a Martin D18 made sometime around 1994 and a 1977 or earlier Yamaha FG336SB"
"Thanks Mike. I have to prove to myself that I can play the material as written but once I've done that I start to allow myself some leeway to have fun and drop in my own bits. There's not too much space to do that in SK's version of…"
"Nice picking!! I learnt the self same version from Steve Kaufman but like me you put in a few extra bits. Looks like she has made you do your picking the garage teee heee"

I'm out of town and just had a chance to get online for a few minutes ... my laptop battery is about dead. Thanks for your kind comments.
I'm pleased that you learned Boys & Girls ... it always brings back fond memories of Quinn & Jennifer as little children.
Keep with the crosspicking, it's a very useful technique.
Take care.
