Hi Mr Carlini,

I've got a question. Not sure if it'll make any sense because maybe it's something that should be obvoius (but it isn't to me).

I love the way you do "Moonlight in Vermont" with Don Stiernberg (an I've stolen what I can). On the bridge -- "telegraph cables sing down the highway...." part -- you seem to almost randomly decide which beats to let ring (a very few) and which beats are left-hand muted (most of them). It sounds so perfect the way you've done it, but it seems random. So is it? ...or am I just missing the obvious count on which you are damp, damp, ringing the rhythm?

unfortunately i moved away from my teacher and was gone for 17 years. by the time i got back he had passed. anyway my problem as i see it is putting together solos, and a sound. i feel that the main problem is just playing more, i got into this rut of just practicing scales cause it's easy mindless stuff and it keeps my chops up but does nothing for the mental side of things. i have a vibe player i mess around with sometimes who is a PLAYER. he comes up with these scale and chord centers and spouts this formula stuff but doesn't seem to be able to explain to me what the actual thought process is (for various reasons that don't need mentioning) anyway i get frustrated cause he just blows by me.

anyway i'd love to find out where i can unlock this formula

I actually have your column on the Crab Walk from Flatpick Magazine. I sent the post after I went through it. It is a finger burner but a great exercise. I'm going to try it on my archtop and pretend it's easier.

Thanks John! I'm looking forward to yet another way to broaden my musical horizons and get (back) on that path of continuous improvement. Thanks for hosting!
