Favorite Flatpickers
All of them! I started playing because of my childhood heroes: Clarence White & Doc Watson.

My other biggest influences would have to be Tony Rice, Russ Barenberg, and Django Reinhardt.

Other favorites include Charles Sawtelle, Dan Crary, Norman Blake, Merle Watson and Jack Lawrence, plus legends like Riley Puckett, Baro Ferrett and Eddie Lang.

From the "new school" I love David Grier, Tim Stafford, Bryan Sutton, Kenny Smith, Beppe Gambetta and John Moore.

And the two Incredible players, who are great teachers as well as pickers, Steve Kaufman and Brad Davis. Without them, their would be many confused and hopeless pickers out there!
Favorite Flatpicking Tunes
Swing '42, Shady Grove, Shady Grove, Black Mountain Rag, (of course!,) Monroe's Hornpipe, Wildwood Flower, Jerusalem Ridge, Nuages, and so many more!
Favorite Guitars
Best I've played? A '40 D-28, a '36 Gibson AJ, a Henderson D-28 and most any Gallagher. I've got a Martin that I just love. But I'm saving up to buy a Gallagher Guitar of my very own, just like my hero has. And Takamine Flatpickers are great for tone unplugged and amplified.
Tell us more about yourself (place a Bio here if you wish)
My dad had a great record collection, and I grew up listening to some fantastic musicians. My interest in guitars was sparked by Doc Watson and Clarence White. Ever since, I've tried to accomplish what I can in music, with the gifts and abilities given to me by God.

I'm a songwriter/guitarist/singer, just starting out my professional solo career. I've spent years playing in honky tonks and rock bands, and backing up singers. I'm working on my first recording as a leader, and will keep you posted when it's done!

Thanks Gabe for the kind words! My solo CD will be done by years' end, so I hope you check it out. Be safe.

Hi Gabriel, thank you for your welcome, yes of course with a name luke McDonnell you have to have of some kind of Irish roots, as I learn more and more flatpicked bluegrass fiddle tunes the more I recognise as versions of old Irish and Scottish tunes, but strangely I prefer the American/bluegrass versions of those tunes. Yes Lowdens are lovely guitars and I am very happy with my 032 but I have hopes of getting a Bourgeoise Country Boy next year...thanks again Gabriel for your comments. Vinny.

I do indeed come to the States on a regular basis Gabriel, mosly each year for the CMA Festival in Nashville, I am a big fan of Brad Paisley and my wife and me came over last year for his end of tour concert in Nashville. I love Nashville a lot but am hoping to make the Merlefest in North Carolina next year at which time I am hoping to find a Bourgeois Country Boy. I usually hire a car over ther so I can get to as many Bluegrass/Country/Jazz gigs as I can with the time available so yeah maybe we might get to meet up for a few tunes next year. Best wishes Gabriel, hope you get your dream Gallagher soon. Vinny

"All I remember was when he had a Martin with flush frets on it (i.e. just markers for a guitar that was designed for slide only) and he had it converted for flat picking. "

Norman's Preferences

I saw a video in which Norman discussed why he preferred a certain fret when refretting one of his Martin's. I am about to refret my D-35 Martin, and I would like to know if anyone remembers a video in which Norman discusses his choice over the Frets Martin uses. Thank You.7See More
