Tell us more about yourself (place a Bio here if you wish)
I am the editor and publisher of Flatpicking Guitar Magazine and have been playing acoustic music on guitar, banjo, mandolin, and bass for nearly thirty years. I've owned and operated my own publishing company since 1988 and owned FGM Records since 1997.

I was born and raised in Northern Virginia, graduated from Annandale High School in 1978, and entered the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland. In 1982 I graduated from the Naval Academy with a BS in Mathematics and was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in the Marine Corps. I served as a Communications Officer in the Marine Corps until 1992. While in the service I also earned a MS in Electrical Engineering from the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, California.

During my time in the service I began publishing a martial arts newsletter, which eventually led to me starting my own publishing company in 1988 while I was still in the service. The small newsletter gradually grew into a journal, which focused on the Chinese internal martial art of Pa Kua Chang (also romanized Ba Gua Zhang).

After leaving the Marine Corps in 1992, having achieved the rank of Captain, I began publishing full time. In addition to publishing the Pa Kua Chang Journal, over the next five years I also published eight books and ten instructional video on various Chinese martial arts subjects. After my first daughter, Emily, was born in January of 1996, I thought that the four to five week-long research trips to China would be hard on my new family and I decided to start a new publication which would be more family oriented. In September of 1996 the first issue of Flatpicking Guitar Magazine (flatpick.com) was published. In June of 1997, my second daughter, Sara, was born.

My two children, and the guitar magazine, were all born while I was living in Monterey, California. In 1998 I decided to move the business to Pulaski, Virginia. Although the business office remains in Pulaski, I moved back to California in 2005 and now live in Rocklin, just east of Sacramento. My aunt, Connie Miller and her sister Jackie, run the day-to-day operations of the business office while I focus on publishing the magazine and producing music CDs and instructional books and DVDs for acoustic guitar players.

In conjunction with publishing Flatpicking Guitar Magazine, I also own FGM Records (fgmrecords.com) and Flatpicking Mercantile (flatpickingmercantile.com). Currently the record label, which specializes in various styles of acoustic guitar music, has produced 25 CDs and 4 live concert DVDs. Additionally we have produced instructional material for guitar and sell it through Flatpicking Mercantile. To date Flatpicking Mercantile has released four instructional books and nine instructional DVDs.

I also play the upright bass with a number of touring bands. For the past several years I have worked primarily with the Brad Davis Band.

I am in a committed relationship with my girlfriend Cindy Kapper.

Free Flatpicking Lessons

For the past several years Flatpicking Gutiar Magazine has sent out a monthly email newsletter to our email list. This newsletter has usually included a free flatpick lesson, as well as flatpick news, and sale events at flatpickingmercantile.com. In the past our monthly flatpicking lessons have been from a variety of sources and were quite haphazard. Starting in May 2008 Mickey Abraham, who was featured in our May/June 2008 issue, joins our staff as the regular email newsletter instructor… Continue

Nice Ning you have here! Ihave been doing webwork for the Ossipee Bluegrass Festival and just added a Ning for them. It's tough to get the inertia going but you certainly seem to have it here. I also play guitar so I am excited to be apart of this. Very cool!

Dan,
Your magazine has re-inspired me as a guitar player. I've played banjo for the past 20 years in a bluegrass band. When that ended I was at an impasse as a musician and started picking up my old martin and buying back issues of Flatpicking guitar. The articles and tabs in your magazine have given me a new energy and enthusiasim for flatpicking. MY poor banjo hasn't seen daylight for 2 years. Thanks!!

I have been a subscriber to the magazine since its inception. Do I have to get another subscription to take advantage of the digital download advantages?

Hi Dan.

Thanks for accepting my invitation to be a friend. Flatpicking Guitar is a magazine I truly look forward to getting and I learn so much from each issue. That is the wonderful thing about guitar. I have been playing since I was 15 and I am still learning and loving every minute of it.
